Basic Course for Health Assessment and Consultation
Hosted by Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR)
Division of Health Assessment and Consultation

Audience: This course is designed for state partners of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and ATSDR staff who are involved with the public health assessment process including conducting public health assessments, health consultations, exposure investigations, and other related public health intervention activities.

Course Description:
The ATSDR Basic Course enables public health professionals involved in the public health assessment process to determine if communities are being exposed to toxic substances in the environment, and to recommend public health actions designed to prevent or reduce harmful exposures and diseases related to toxic substances. The training provides an overview of the various steps of the public health assessment process, from the initial site team meeting through the completion of the health assessment document.

The content of the training is presented through various learning strategies including presentations, exercises, role playing activities, and a field practicum. In the field, participants visit stations and conduct interviews and meetings. A group of ATSDR staff members serve as mentors to assist and guide participants during the training activities. By the end of the week, participants are able to present their public health analyses, conclusions, and recommendations to the rest of the class.
