This seminar, sponsored by the Hazardous Substance Research Center / South and Southwest, will present an update of an ongoing research demonstration to evaluate the potential of "active capping" technologies for contaminated sediments on the Anacostia River in Washington, DC. The goal of the Anacostia demonstration is to comparatively validate, on a field scale, the performance of traditional and alternative capping technologies under realistic, well-documented conditions. The presentation will provide an overview on the use of in situ capping technologies for contaminated sediments, background on the Anacostia River, status and schedule of the demonstration project, and experimental results on several reactive media (zero-valent iron and coke sorbent) being considered as part of an "active cap" design. In addition, presenters will discuss other innovative capping designs under consideration for field scale use.
