Institutional controls are legal instruments or administrative mechanisms that protect people from exposure to contamination by limiting land or resource use before, during, and after an environmental cleanup. These controls include government controls such as ordinances and permits, informational controls (signs, billboards), and proprietary controls such as recording the information in land records as a notice, or deed restrictions.

EPA drafted a handbook that addresses utilizing institutional controls specifically in Indian country to guide EPA staff through tribe-specific issues such as Trust land and subsistence living. EPA will soon begin consultation regarding this draft handbook, which will remain open through December 31, 2012.

In this informational webinar, we will describe the draft handbook, "Institutional Controls in Indian Country", and then take questions.
