Have you ever wanted to moonlight as a Superfund hydrogeologist? This session will touch on all things hydro, with an emphasis on how hydrogeology impacts site characterization, contaminant fate and transport, and development of conceptual site models. There will be an overview of the big-picture concepts of groundwater and the general geology encountered in Region 2. The course will include a discussion of data needs for understanding fate and transport at Superfund sites, and will explore the various tools and investigative techniques hydrogeologists utilize, including field sampling methods, geophysical techniques, and aquifer testing. The presentation will also touch on some factors that influence contaminant fate and transport, including the aquifer matrix, contaminant types, site history, and presence of NAPL. We hope you leave the session with a better understanding of the importance of hydrogeologic investigations during site characterization, and how/when/why different types of data may be useful to developing your conceptual site model.
