ETV Evaluations of Lead-in-Dust Technologies
Internet-based seminar
Hosted by U.S. EPA
Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation and the Office of Research and Development

Lead contamination continues to be an important issue for many older residential dwelling throughout the United States. Remediation is expensive, time consuming, and very inconvenient for the families that are directly impacted, because they must evacuate the residence prior to remediation and can not return until the lead content of the dust in the residence is below a specified standard. Thus, a critical question as to whether field analytical technology can be used to facilitate home reentry/reuse following such remediation needed to be addressed. Under the umbrella of EPA's Environmental Technology Verification Program, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the developers of various technologies worked to provide solid information as to the performance of such technologies in answering this fundamental question. Between November of 2001 and January of 2003, ORNL oversaw the testing of two fundamentally different technologies (x-ray fluorescence and anodic stripping voltammetry) in tests conducted by four vendors. This Internet Brownbag Seminar will review in detail the results of all six embodiments of these technologies as they analyzed more than 150 samples of lead contaminated dusts in wipes, and experts will be available to answer specific questions about their performance. For general information contact Jeff Heimerman by telephone at 703-603-7191 (Fax: 703-603-9135) or via e-mail at heimerman.jeff@epa.gov
