Ecosystem services is the term applied to the life-sustaining benefits that nature provides, such as waste decomposition, clean water, and flood control. Knowledge of the ecosystem services available at a contaminated site is necessary in order to identify and adopt measures to reduce impacts on those services during remediation activities.
