Offered by the California Air Response Planning Alliance, the California Resources Board, MetOne Instruments, and South Coast Air Quality Management District.

This one-day course instructs participants in the practices and procedures for using the E-BAM portable particulate monitor for real-time or near real-time automated measurement of smoke particulates during air emergency incidents that pose potential safety and health consequences that can affect nearby communities.

Topics include using E-BAMs for air emergency response monitoring, instrument variability and configuration, data validation and deposition, sampling plans, data interpretation and messaging, and coordinating with partner agencies, public health officials, and Incident Command.

Instructional methods include a combination of lecture, group discussion, and hands-on training sessions. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own instrument for the hands-on training session.

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

• Properly follow procedures regarding:
  • Instrument operation
  • Use of E-BAMs during emergency response deployment
  • Site selection criteria
  • Calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • Instrument sensors and parameters
  • Instrument assembly, disassembly and storage
  • Data transmission, deposition, and validation
  • Public messaging and interagency coordination
• Identify the operational parameters, limitations, and data interpretation requirements for the instrument
• Identify the factors that affect instrument functionality
• Discuss the use of air monitoring data for the establishment of personnel and operations health and safety requirements.

This training is designed for air monitoring personnel, enforcement personnel, emergency responders, technical experts, public messaging staff, and those who use air quality data to identify the public’s level of risk.

CARPA is also sponsoring an Air Emergency Response Toxic Gas Analyzer Workshop offered the following day at the same location.
