EPA is required to comply with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) whenever we perform or fund an action that may have the potential to impact historic and/or archeological resources. At EPA, compliance with Section 106 is generally triggered through Superfund remedial and removal projects, Brownfields projects, construction of drinking water projects, and in some instances, the issuance of NPDES and other permits.

This one-day training is open to all Divisions and will give you the tools you need to navigate the NHPA Section 106 process successfully. Participants will learn about the nature of historic properties and cultural resources, how to identify the need for NHPA Section 106 consultation during your project, and how to plan for and perform a consultation. The course will also discuss the different types of agreement documents employed and the expectation in working with consulting parties. And, a few of your regional colleagues will share their experiences with Section 106 on their sites.
