*Rescheduled from June 26th*
A virtual MS Teams meeting on the Optimization program. Time will be allowed for an introduction to Optimization and its services followed by a Q&A session. Below is some background information on the Optimization program. Register to learn more!
What can Optimization do for Me? is a one-hour webinar that will provide detail on the review process and the benefits an RPM can expect to derive. The optimization review process will be presented so the participant will learn (1) how the process is applied in practical terms, (2) how the process is modified to address site-specific circumstances, (3) the RPM and stakeholder role in collaborating with the optimization team to make the review process efficient and beneficial, and (4) how to tell if a site is a good candidate for an optimization.
In this webinar participants will:
-
Learn what optimization is, the history of the program and where it is today.
-
Examine the optimization review process including a primer on the standard operating procedures, expectations, activities frequently conducted and information on fund-lead versus PRP-lead optimizations.
-
Receive updates on results reported in the Optimization Progress Report and lessons learned from optimization.
The course provides opportunities for interactive question and answer to give RPMs a clear sense of the intellectual and time investment required for an optimization review and the benefits of applying the process. This webinar is recommended for RPMs and other site managers of all levels who are considering an optimization review or who are interested in learning more about the process.
Presenters:

This webinar will be EPA-only given the draft-deliberative and pre-decisional nature of a site strategy document.
A site strategy is an internal high-level planning and management tool, which documents a site’s overall assessment and remediation strategy to move a site forward to completion by:
(1) prioritizing high-level goals;
(2) outlining key Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) activities required to achieve site goals; and
(3) identifying key issues, challenges, and potential resolutions.
The site strategy can be used by the EPA project team to manage and communicate site priorities to regional and headquarters management, and to inform improved decision-making and coordination of project resources.
In this webinar participants will:
-
Learn what a site strategy is and its benefits as a site management tool.
-
Receive an introduction to the site strategy development process, concepts, and best practices.
-
Discuss the Superfund program’s site strategy initiative and available resources and support for remedial project managers.
This webinar is recommended for EPA remedial project managers of all levels who are considering developing a site strategy for their site or who are interested in learning more about the process and available resources.
Presenters:
-
Nathan Barlet, USEPA OLEM OSRTI TIFSD TIIB, Environmental Engineer

An underground refined petroleum products pipeline developed a leak that resulted in pooled petroleum at the surface. Five remedial technologies were applied over a 13-year period. A significant rebound occurred at the conclusion of each remedial technology. A new Conceptual Site Model (CSM) was developed incorporating High Resolution Site Characterization (HRSC) and 3D contaminant modeling. This study revealed hydrocarbon pockets were serving as secondary sources leaching to groundwater resulting in chronic post-remedial rebound. A revised remediation plan was created to focus on eliminating all secondary sources in the vadose zone before remediating the dissolved phase contaminants. By eliminating the ongoing secondary sources prior to dissolved phase remediation, contaminant reduction efficiencies were drastically improved. Once Benzene and TPH groundwater concentrations were reduced below their regulatory goals, the presiding Judge agreed with the regulator’s recommendation and issued No Further Action Status. Join the Engineering Forum call to hear from Janet Castle, President and Founder of Eagle Synergistic Optimizing Technologies, and learn more about the HRSC tools used for this case study.

The Networking and Experience Remediation Directory (NERD) has been up for a while now and there are many contact cards with experience spanning the whole of Superfund, but there could always be more! Join us to create or update your own contact card and find Superfund staff to collaborate on site issues.
Prior to attending, please bring 1 to 2 technical or administrative issues from a site you are working on and we will use the NERD to find staff to reach out to. If you do not currently work on a site, other issues are welcome.
Background on NERD:
The Networking and Experience Remediation Directory (NERD) was created by Andrew Schmidt from Region 8 with the help of Cindy Frickle and Json Marruffo from EPA Headquarters. This searchable database is meant to connect remedial project managers, technical support, and headquarters staff who are working on similar sites and technical issues.
NERD is an EPA-only database that allows users to filter lists of Superfund staff based on self-identified experience or expertise in various categories. The result is a stack of "contact cards" containing each user’s photo, contact info, and full list of experience.
This hour long virtual session will consist of a short introduction to NERD, a demo of the SharePoint site with examples of how it has been used, how to create a contact card, how to export search results, and a question and answer session.
Before the webinar, feel free to give a shot at creating a contact card and navigating the NERD. If you have any questions, please bring them to the session!
