General Information
Event Name: Project Management Basics - Virtual Delivery
Hosted By: OSRTI-CERCLA Education Center (CEC) and Environmental Response Training Program (ERTP)
OSRTI CEC & ERTP
Event Description:

This 3-day, 2.5 hours-per-day webinar series is presented in 6 modules. The course describes powerful, but simple, project management fundamentals and tools essential to successful project performance. This series defines the project life cycle, discusses Project Manager roles and responsibilities, and describes approaches and tools that Superfund staff can use to deal with the human and logistical side of project management.

The instructional methodology for this series includes instructor-led lecture and group discussion based on real-world project scenarios. The series will utilize an electronic polling software to facilitate participant engagement and involvement.

The role of a Remedial Project Manager (RPM) is to be a “jack of all trades.” RPM responsibilities include managing all facets of the Remedial Process, which include:

  • Understanding project scope and setting goals,
  • Setting budgets and managing costs,
  • Setting and managing schedules,
  • Leading teams,
  • Negotiating and compromising,
  • Solving complex problems,
  • Juggling multiple tasks,
  • Planning and scoping projects,
  • Soliciting and managing contracts,
  • Managing relationships with state and local partners, and
  • Resolving conflicts.

RPMs are trained as scientists and engineers. However, to effectively handle RPM responsibilities, they must also be excellent Project Managers.

Target Group

These sessions are intended for U.S. EPA RPMs or other U.S. EPA personnel with environmental assessment or clean-up project management responsibilities who want to refresh and/or gain additional project management fundamentals insight.

Objectives

The modules in this webinar series will include:

  • Scope and Control:

Discover a practical method that can be used to define a project’s objectives and tasks by building a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) to capture all the activities involved in the project. Learn how to establish and apply a WBS to identify variances and project change situations, as well as how to apply a WBS to effectively plan, monitor, and control projects.

  • Developing Budgets:

Identify project costs to generate and track a project baseline budget. Explore the definition of budgets based on the development of a WBS, how to estimate and include contingencies in budgets, how to develop a baseline for performance measurement, and how to apply forecasting and variance analysis techniques.

  • Planning and Scheduling:

Understand dynamic project management planning techniques such as activity definition, Gantt Charts, Network Diagrams, the Critical Path Method, and ways to improve project schedule and performance.

  • Leading High Performing Teams:

Learn important skills for leading project teams to achieve project excellence. Be introduced to the characteristics of a project leader that are needed to obtain the highest performance from teams.

  • Resolving Conflicts:

Discover ways to cope with conflict during project execution, including how to recognize conflict, a model for conflict resolution approaches, and actions that RPMs and site teams can employ to prevent, reduce, and resolve conflicts when they occur.

  • Managing Project Risk:

Explore and practice strategies for managing risk on projects. This is an ongoing process that starts before a project begins and extends over the life of the project. Learn the importance of risk identification, analysis, and monitoring.

The virtual version of this course is delivered over three, 2.5-hour days via MS Teams.
