Implementing Public Involvement in CERCLA
Course ID: POL-405
Hosted by Northwest Environmental Training Center

This course provides guidance to plan for and implement an effective public/community involvement program that encourages collaboration and the sharing of information. In 1980 Congress passed the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) to incorporate public involvement into the Superfund process. This ensures that members of the public invested in cleanup actions have an opportunity to participate in the cleanup process. Initially, public involvement consisted of simply informing citizens, rather than involving them in the decision-making process. Over the last two decades, however, California's population has diversified, and needs to be considered when planning and implementing public involvement processes.
