Triad Approach to Cost-Effective, Confident Project Decisions
Hosted by U.S. EPA

This course will cover the basics of the Triad approach to site characterization and cleanup, briefly illustrating key concepts with examples from actual projects. The Triad approach combines detailed, up-front systematic planning and decision uncertainty management with dynamic work strategies and state of the art real time measurement technologies. "Real-time measurement technologies" includes not only the instrumentation used to generate the data, but also sampling tools, and software for storing, processing and displaying data results in real-time. The Triad approach lowers project costs while increasing confidence that data are correctly generated and interpreted so that decisions about the presence, volume, and exposure potential of contaminated media are defensible. The session will be relevant to regulators, environmental program managers, risk assessors, and quality control staff. By taking the course, participants will achieve the following objectives:

• Understand the mechanics of the Triad approach: systematic project planning, dynamic work strategies, and real-time measurement systems;
•   Understand the importance of conceptual site models (CSMs) to a cost-effective, successful project and how Triad improves the accuracy of CSMs;
•   Understand the basics of sampling and analytical uncertainties, and their affect on data quality; and
•   Locate available Triad documentation and technical support. For general information contact Deana Crumbling by telephone at 703-603-0643 (Fax: 703-603-9135) or via e-mail at crumbling.deana@epa.gov
