General Information
Event Name: Remedial Process Training
Hosted By: U.S. EPA
Office of Superfund and Emergency Management
Event Description:

Remedial Process Training provides a comprehensive examination of the technical and regulatory challenges that Remedial Project Managers (RPMs) must face while coordinating, directing, and reviewing remedial response efforts at Superfund sites. The course covers key topics such as risk management, smart scoping, remedial technologies, applicable or relevant and appropriate requirements (ARARs), Superfund decision documents, remedial design and remedial action (RD/RA) and community involvement. It reviews requirements for all phases of the remedial process, including Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS), remedy selection, RD/RA, operation and maintenance, site close out, five-year reviews, and remedy optimization. The course also discusses the principles of community involvement, the role of community involvement plans, and methods of addressing community-related issues, including conflict management and effective negotiation. Participants engage in a series of exercises that allows use of newly acquired skills and knowledge to a hypothetical site, simulating the real-life experiences of RPMs in the Superfund program.

Course Objectives:

  • Learn to identify and incorporate the various regulatory and policy aspects of the Superfund program.
  • Plan and implement remedial response activities at Superfund sites using effective methods.
  • Integrate community involvement activities into the remedial process, ensuring effective communication and engagement.
  • Practice applying the concepts covered during the course through exercises designed to simulate real-life scenarios.

The Remedial Process Training course is a beginner-level training designed for EPA Superfund RPMs with one to three years of experience in the Superfund program, particularly those responsible for or needing to understand remedial response activities under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). Additionally, the course may be valuable to other EPA remedial program staff as well as state and tribal RPMs.
