Radiation Safety - Overview for Environmental Professionals - Day 1

This one day introductory level course is designed to provide participants with an overview and basic understanding of the fundamental principles of radiation safety. This course is intended for environmental professionals who are not health physicists or other radiation safety specialists, but require a basic knowledge and understanding of radiation safety. Participants who are responsible for reviewing and discussing radiological issues will benefit from this course.
Topics that are discussed include: fundamental concepts of atomic structure, radiation, and radioactive decay; methods and characteristics of radiation interaction with matter; radiation dose limits and basic methods to control radiation exposures; and biological effects of radiation.
Instructional methods include: lectures, class discussions, and demonstrations.
After completing the course, participants will be able to:
- Discuss basic terminology and fundamental principles of radiation.
- Identify the three primary types of ionizing radiation and characteristics.
- Identify radiation dose limits and explain basic methods to control exposures.
- Discuss biological effects of radiation.

Tuition - Personnel from EPA, Other Federal Agencies, and State and Local Government DO NOT PAY TUITION for ERTP Courses. Tuition for University Staff, Community HAZMAT Teams, and Students is Also Waived. Personnel not directly employed by a government agency (e.g.. private industry, contractor, or unemployed) pay tuition of $150 and will be sent further information about how to pay tuition after they have registered.
